ISRO announces Chandrayaan-3’s departure from Earth’s orbit as it journeys toward the moon.

On Tuesday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully placed the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft into the translunar orbit, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards the Moon. The spacecraft completed its orbits around the Earth and underwent a successful perigee-firing at ISTRAC, ISRO, which allowed it to be injected into the translunar orbit.Next on its agenda is the Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI), which is planned for August 5, 2023. Following the trans-lunar injection (TLI), the spacecraft left its orbit around the Earth and is now on a trajectory towards the vicinity of the Moon, putting it on a ‘lunar transfer trajectory’.The Chandrayaan-3 mission builds upon the achievements of its predecessor, Chandrayaan-2, and aims to showcase a range of capabilities. These include reaching the Moon’s orbit, executing a soft landing on the lunar surface using a lander, and deploying a rover from the lander to conduct surface studies on the Moon. ISRO’s goal is to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface.Prior to its successful journey towards the Moon, the spacecraft’s orbit was systematically raised in five stages following its launch on July 14 as part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Moreover, during the SemiconIndia Conference 2023 on July 30, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the expanding collaboration between India and the US in various domains, including space. India has signed the Artemis Accords and is promoting stronger NASA-ISRO collaboration, indicating a promising future for cooperation between the two countries in space exploration. The spacecraft, consisting of a lander and rover configuration, will be carried by a propulsion module until it reaches a 100 km lunar orbit. The mission aims to demonstrate India’s capability in lunar exploration, contributing to scientific advancements and furthering its position in space exploration endeavors.
