According to a report published in Business Today, a woman residing in Bengaluru experienced a loss of Rs 25,000 due to a scam linked to a food delivery app. This occurrence underscores the necessity for heightened vigilance and awareness among users of such platforms. Here’s a breakdown of what transpired and the precautions one should take to stay protected.

The Unfortunate Incident:
Shilpa Sarnobat, a 64-year-old resident of Nagawara area in Bengaluru, ordered food from a food delivery app on August 6. However, shortly after placing the order, she chose to cancel it. Unfortunately, the app charged her a cancellation fee. A day later, on August 8, Sarnobat received an unexpected call from an unfamiliar number. The caller identified themselves as a representative from the customer care of the concerned food delivery app. The caller informed Sarnobat that she was entitled to a refund for the cancellation fees.

Trusting the caller’s assertion and believing them to be genuinely associated with the app’s customer service, Sarnobat provided her order details. Subsequently, she followed the caller’s instructions and downloaded an application. She also shared her bank account details with the individual. Shortly thereafter, Sarnobat received a notification indicating that a substantial sum of Rs 25,000 had been debited from her bank account.

Upon attempting to contact the individual, Sarnobat encountered unresponsiveness. It was at this point that she realized she had fallen victim to a scam. In response, she promptly lodged a complaint with her local police station to report the incident.

Safety Measures:
The surge in online scams underscores the need for heightened caution. To safeguard against such fraudulent activities, individuals can adopt a few key strategies. Firstly, it is crucial to exercise skepticism and refrain from sharing personal and banking information with anyone online. Mere claims of being a bank or company employee should not be taken at face value. Performing a thorough background check and verifying the authenticity of the person’s identity is imperative before proceeding with any interaction.
