An intriguing addition to this AI-driven transformation may be in the works, as Google appears to be exploring the implementation of an AI writing and editing tool tailored for Chromebooks.

According to a report by 9to5mac, Google has been diligently engaged in a project marked by five distinct codenames, with “Orca,” “Mako,” and “Manta” being the primary three identifiers. The report outlined that the term “Orca” is anticipated to manifest predominantly within ChromeOS’s right-click menu, a contextual option that surfaces when users are actively editing a body of text. Once selected, “Orca” would initiate the “Mako” user interface (UI), which would materialize as a dialog or “bubble” overlaying the user’s screen.

The functional attributes attributed to “Mako” were elucidated in the report, shedding light on three key capabilities it is designed to execute. The first entails the ability to “request rewrites” of specific portions of text, essentially offering alternative phrasing or structuring. The second core function involves presenting a selection of “preset text queries,” offering users quick and contextually relevant text suggestions. The third facet involves the AI mechanism’s capacity to “insert” the reworded or restructured text directly into the original typing location.

Interestingly, the AI-driven rewriting process is not executed locally on the user’s device. Instead, the report indicated that “Manta,” presumably a backend component, facilitates the transmission of the user’s original text and input prompt to Google’s remote servers. These servers, in turn, process the information and return an AI-enhanced version of the text for insertion. The report emphasized that users would be required to grant their explicit consent before engaging in this process, ensuring compliance with privacy considerations.

Moreover, the integration of this generative AI writing feature directly into the ChromeOS ecosystem could potentially extend its capabilities to enhance text composition across a diverse range of applications. While a concrete timeline for the launch of this feature remains unclear, speculations point toward a potential introduction alongside ChromeOS version 118, tentatively slated for release in mid-October.

In a related context, it’s noteworthy that Microsoft had previously introduced a similar AI-driven innovation earlier in the year, known as Copilot for Windows. Functioning akin to Bing Chat, Copilot is designed to facilitate users in performing everyday tasks, such as enabling dark mode or conducting content searches, via a sidebar accessible at any time.

As both Google and Microsoft continue to explore and implement AI technologies to enhance user experiences, the landscape of digital productivity is expected to undergo significant transformations, marking a new era of seamless AI integration into everyday tasks and activities.
