College building in Uttarakhand collapses and is swept away by floodwaters.

Amidst the relentless downpour that has enveloped Uttarakhand, a disheartening incident unfolded on Monday in Dehradun, as the Doon Defence College’s building in Maldevta succumbed to the forces of nature. The structure’s collapse was wrought by the overpowering currents of the River Bandal, which had surged beyond its banks due to the incessant rainfall witnessed across the state over the past 24 hours.

In the midst of this meteorological turmoil, the Uttarakhand meteorological department issued a resounding red alert, signaling the imminent threat of heavy precipitation in six districts, including Dehradun and Nainital. The hill state, already grappling with the overwhelming impact of an unrelenting monsoon, has borne witness to the tragic loss of 60 lives due to the rain’s destructive fury. Adding to the distress, an unsettling count of at least 17 individuals remain unaccounted for.

The unyielding rains, in their wake, have triggered landslides that have effectively barricaded several roads, among them significant national highways. The Rishikesh-Chamba National Highway, beset by a landslide near Kunjapuri Bagardhar in Tehri, found itself impassable. Similarly, the movement of heavy vehicles came to an abrupt halt at Sakhnidhar along the Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar National Highways. The havoc extended to properties as well, with a staggering 1,169 houses succumbing to the forces of nature, accompanied by substantial damage to agricultural land.

The gravity of the situation compelled authorities in Dehradun and Champawat to take a precautionary stance, ordering the closure of all schools for the day. As the specter of flooding looms, the Uttarakhand government sprang into action, mandating district magistrates and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to be on vigilant standby. Their preparedness aims to provide immediate assistance and relief to the beleaguered populace in the event of any unforeseen emergencies triggered by the ongoing deluge.
