The incident unfolded when a fire initially broke out at a car repair shop on a fateful Monday night. Subsequently, the flames spread to a nearby fuel station, situated on the outskirts of Makhachkal, the capital of Dagestan. This grim turn of events was confirmed by Russia’s emergency situations ministry.

Among the heart-wrenching details, it was revealed that several children were counted among the casualties. Sergey Melikov, the head of the Dagestan republic, shared this somber information, while state media agency TASS reported that no less than three bodies had been recovered from the debris.

In a conflicting report, TASS cited a department within the Russian ministry of health, stating that the number of wounded individuals was 80, a figure seemingly revised from an earlier estimate of 102 that had been provided by Melikov. The gravity of the situation prompted the emergency ministry to dispatch a specialized aircraft to evacuate the injured victims from the explosion site to medical facilities in Moscow.

Search and rescue operations continued resolutely into Tuesday morning. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and search for any potential survivors, as conveyed by TASS.

The catastrophic incident didn’t escape the attention of Russia’s Investigative Committee, which initiated a criminal investigation into the tragedy, according to RIA Novosti, a state media agency.

Reacting to the distressing news, a statement released by the Kremlin conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s condolences to the grieving families and friends of the victims. Additionally, Putin wished a swift and complete recovery to all those who had been harmed by the explosion.

Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov, the head of government in Dagestan, personally visited the site of the disaster in Makhachkala on Tuesday, further highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

Given the immense loss and suffering, the Dagestan government declared a day of mourning on Tuesday, a solemn gesture reported by TASS. This unfortunate day will stand as a reminder of the lives lost and the lasting impact of the tragic gas station explosion.
