Head of WHO commends India’s Ayushman Bharat Scheme.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), expressed admiration for India’s strides in healthcare coverage and initiatives during the inauguration ceremony of the ongoing G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Beginning his address, Dr. Tedros extended gratitude to India for its warm hospitality and visionary leadership in hosting the G20 Summit. He specifically lauded India’s efforts in advancing Universal Health Coverage and highlighted the Ayushman Bharat scheme as the world’s largest health assurance initiative.

Recalling his visit to a Health and Wellness Centre in Gandhinagar, Dr. Tedros commended the primary healthcare services that the centre provides to 1000 households, emphasizing its value.

He also hailed the telemedicine facilities offered in Gujarat, noting their significance in delivering prescriptions and treatments locally. Dr. Tedros expressed appreciation for India’s G20 Presidency, which is taking the lead in launching the Global Digital Health Initiative.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared that over 70 delegates from various countries participated in the G20 Health Ministers’ meeting and side events in Gandhinagar. He highlighted India’s holistic approach to the health sector under the Modi government.

The G20 Health Ministers’ meeting, held under the G20 India Presidency, took place from August 17 to 19 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. India, as the G20 President, joined the G20 Troika along with Indonesia and Brazil, forming a trio of developing and emerging economies for the first time.

The focus of the G20 Health Minister’s Meeting centered around three key priorities: preventing, preparing for, and responding to health emergencies with a focus on anti-microbial resistance and the One Health framework; enhancing cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector to ensure access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable medical solutions; and promoting Digital Health innovations to enhance universal health coverage and healthcare service delivery.
