Will Rahul Gandhi face Smriti Irani once more in Amethi for the 2024 contest?

Amethi, a stronghold of the Gandhi family for an extended period, experienced a significant shift in 2019 during the general election when BJP’s Smriti Irani managed to defeat Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ending the family’s reign.

In a recent development, Ajay Rai, who was newly appointed as the Uttar Pradesh Congress president, declared on Friday that Rahul Gandhi would be a candidate from Amethi in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This announcement sparked conversations and debates concerning this high-profile constituency, which has traditionally been associated with the Gandhi-Nehru family. Throughout its history, the Gandhi-Nehru family has only suffered defeat twice in this Congress stronghold. The first instance was just after the Emergency, when Sanjay Gandhi lost to Janata Party candidate Ravindra Pratap Singh.

Rahul Gandhi initially entered the parliamentary arena by representing the Amethi constituency in 2004. He went on to secure victory in the next two Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency before facing a defeat to BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019. Presently, Sonia Gandhi is the sole Congress parliamentarian from Uttar Pradesh, representing Rae Bareli. However, the party aims to reclaim Amethi from Smriti Irani.

Currently, Rahul Gandhi holds the position of Member of Parliament from Wayanad in Kerala. Upon his arrival at the airport from Delhi, Rai, surrounded by party workers and leaders, confidently stated, “Rahul Gandhi will unquestionably contest the Lok Sabha election from Amethi; the people of Amethi are here.”

In response to a question regarding Smriti Irani, who emerged victorious over Rahul Gandhi in the previous election, Rai suggested that she appears to be frustrated. He referenced her promise to provide sugar at ₹13 per kg and questioned whether she had fulfilled it. Rai remarked, “People from Amethi are here, ask them.”

The dynamic between Smriti Irani and Rahul Gandhi is notable. According to reports, Smriti Irani’s active engagement in Amethi has bolstered the BJP’s presence in the region. While BJP legislators exert influence in the Jagdishpur, Tiloi, and Salon assembly constituencies, the Samajwadi Party maintains control over Gauriganj and Amethi seats. Supporters of Smriti Irani within the Amethi Lok Sabha seat emphasize the developmental initiatives undertaken by both central and state governments.

Despite his previous defeat in the 2019 elections, Rahul Gandhi has visited Amethi on three occasions. The prospect of his potential re-entry into the constituency has kept the aspirations of local party leaders alive. Rahul Gandhi has actively participated in Amethi, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic when he provided relief materials to the region. His actions have resonated positively with local party workers, evident from recent statements made by the state party chief.

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections hold the potential for a heightened political contest in the Amethi constituency, should Rahul Gandhi decide to reclaim his former seat.
