Assam Rifles Director-General Lt. Gen. P.C. Nair has emphasized that the country’s oldest paramilitary force has maintained impartiality in Manipur, taking action to dismantle bunkers, confiscate weapons, and rescue innocent individuals from both communities over the past four months.

Recent violence along the boundary of Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts in Manipur has resulted in 29 people being injured and eight fatalities since August 29, according to a defense source. The area has witnessed sporadic clashes between two groups, with reports of injuries in Churachandpur.

Lt. Gen. P.C. Nair, the Director-General of Assam Rifles (AR), explained that despite facing criticism from Meitei groups and BJP legislators for alleged bias, the paramilitary force remains impartial. He stressed that AR consists of soldiers from both communities who serve together without rivalry. He pointed out that the leadership within the Army and Assam Rifles is dedicated to maintaining peace.

While AR falls under the administrative control of the Union Home Ministry, its operational control lies with the Army. Nair revealed that out of the 212 locations where violence occurred in the past 120 days, the force successfully restored peace in most areas.

He acknowledged that the current unrest in Manipur, although challenging, is not on the same scale as the violence during the 1990s Naga militancy peak. However, the force faces new challenges, such as confronting hostile mobs and road blockades led by women.

Nair emphasized the importance of dialogue among the local population to restore peace, highlighting the need for communities to engage in meaningful communication.

Meanwhile, women’s groups in Imphal decided to launch a “civil disobedience movement” aimed at disrupting government offices. They expressed frustration with the government’s failure to resolve the crisis and announced their intention to obstruct the movements of Central paramilitary forces’ vehicles while refusing relief materials from security forces until normalcy is restored.
