PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia is for the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits.

On the morning of September 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Indonesia to participate in the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits. These meetings serve as a platform for discussing the future direction of India’s partnerships within this strategically significant region.

Mr. Modi shared his anticipation for the events through a social media platform (formerly Twitter), where he posted, “Landed in Jakarta. Looking forward to the ASEAN related meetings and to working with various leaders for making a better planet.”

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also highlighted the significance of the visit by tweeting, “PM @narendramodi arrives in Jakarta to participate in @ASEAN related Summits. An opportunity to engage with the leaders of ASEAN and EAS on important regional and global issues.”

Before his departure from New Delhi, Mr. Modi emphasized the robust nature of the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and ASEAN, which has infused new energy into their relations.

During his stay in Jakarta, Prime Minister Modi will take part in the ASEAN-India Summit and engage in the East Asia Summit. Following these meetings, he will return to Delhi, where India is hosting the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10.

Speaking about India’s “Act East” policy, Mr. Modi stated, “Engagement with ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy. I look forward to discussing with ASEAN leaders the future contours of our partnership, which has now entered its fourth decade. Engagement with ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership entered into last year has injected new dynamism in our ties.”

Subsequently, after the ASEAN-India Summit, the prime minister will participate in the 18th East Asia Summit. This forum offers a valuable platform for deliberating on various regional issues, including food and energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation. Mr. Modi expressed his eagerness to exchange views with other East Asia Summit leaders on practical cooperative measures to collectively address these global challenges.
