Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is venturing into the realm of cutting-edge artificial intelligence, aiming to develop a system that rivals the most advanced models from OpenAI. According to the Wall Street Journal, insiders familiar with the project have revealed this ambitious undertaking.

The target? To have this new AI powerhouse ready for deployment by the following year. As per the Journal’s report, this forthcoming AI model is expected to be several times more potent than its predecessor, Llama 2, which was unveiled by Meta in July. Llama 2 is an open-source AI language model distributed via Microsoft’s Azure cloud services, intended to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

While the finer details of this planned system are subject to potential changes, its primary purpose is to empower other companies to build sophisticated text generation, analysis, and other advanced services, as reported by the newspaper.

Meta has outlined its timeline for training this new AI marvel, referred to as a “large language model,” with the process set to commence in early 2024, as indicated in the report. However, Meta has yet to respond to Reuters’ request for official comments regarding this development.

It’s worth noting that businesses and enterprises have eagerly embraced the burgeoning generative AI market, driven by the capabilities demonstrated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT since its late-year launch. In fact, Bloomberg News disclosed in July that Apple, too, is delving into this AI space, working on offerings similar to ChatGPT and Bard. Apple has even crafted its framework, known as ‘Ajax,’ for creating large language models. Engineers at the company are also reportedly testing a chatbot internally, colloquially referred to as ‘Apple GPT.’ This competition in the AI landscape promises an exciting future of innovation and advancement.
