BJP lashes out at KCR’s promise of 250 free electricity units for Muslim washermen ahead of Telangana elections.

In Hyderabad, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has issued an order granting Muslim washermen the benefit of 250 units of free electricity. This benefit was previously provided to backward class washermen. The order comes after the announcement of a Congress party’s Gruha Jyoti scheme, guaranteeing 200 units of free electricity per month. This decision has sparked political debate, with the BJP accusing KCR of targeting Hindus. Meanwhile, a press note from the government’s Secretary and Commissioner of Minority Welfare Department states, “The government is implementing a scheme to supply free electricity up to 250 units per month for washermen washermen (BC-D) of Dhobi Ghats, laundry shops, etc., under G.O.Ms.No.02, Backward Class Welfare (D) Department, dated 04.04.2021.”

This move follows the demand made by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who stated that there are groups of Muslim washermen engaged in the same profession and they need such benefits. Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao promptly ordered equal benefits for Muslim washermen in their Dhobi Ghats and laundry shops. It’s worth noting that Asaduddin Owaisi is the Member of Parliament from Hyderabad and represents the AIMIM party.

Telangana is set to have elections by the end of this year, with expectations of a triangular contest involving the Congress, BJP, and TRS. The outcome of the state assembly elections is anticipated to set the direction for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP’s National General Secretary and MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar has criticized the TRS government’s decision. He accused Telangana CM Chandrashekar Rao of jeopardizing the careers of Hindu washermen.
