HP and Google have announced a strategic partnership with the aim of manufacturing Chromebooks in India as part of their commitment to the Make in India initiative. This collaboration is driven by a shared vision to enhance the digital education landscape in the country by making affordable, secure, and high-quality computing devices readily available to educational authorities, schools, and institutions, ultimately empowering more students to enrich their learning experiences.

The production of Chromebook devices will take place at the Flex Facility near Chennai, where HP has been manufacturing various laptops and desktops since August 2020. The production of HP Chromebooks is scheduled to commence on October 2, 2023.

Vickram Bedi, Senior Director – Personal Systems, HP India, emphasized HP’s dedication to promoting digital equity and enabling digital education initiatives across India. He stated that local manufacturing of Chromebook laptops in India would provide easier access to affordable PCs for Indian students, aligning with the government’s Make in India initiative.

Bani Dhawan, Head of Education – South Asia, Google, highlighted Google’s collaboration with the local education ecosystem, supporting their transition to digital-first learning experiences through products and teacher programs. The local production of Chromebooks with HP is seen as a crucial step in advancing the digital transformation of education in India, with the hope that this collaboration will accelerate technology adoption in more schools, ensuring that every student and educator has access to the tools and skills needed to realize their full potential.

HP’s manufacturing efforts in India have been expanding since 2020, with the production of laptops, including HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks, and HP G8 series notebooks, initiated in December 2021. Furthermore, HP’s manufacturing operations have extended to include a range of commercial desktop models, such as desktop mini towers (MT), mini desktops (DM), small form factor (SFF) desktops, and various All-in-One PCs, offering options with both Intel and AMD processors to cater to diverse customer needs.
