Scientists weigh in on AI’s potential in earthquake prediction.

The world has witnessed the devastating aftermath of massive earthquakes, such as the destruction of major monuments in Turkey. However, scientists suggest that the use of artificial intelligence could play a crucial role in predicting earthquakes in advance.

In a recent development, scientists conducted a seven-month trial in China using an AI-driven tool that demonstrated a 70 percent accuracy rate in predicting earthquakes one week before they occurred. The tool provided weekly forecasts and successfully predicted 14 earthquakes within a radius of approximately 200 miles (320 kilometers) from their estimated locations, closely matching their expected magnitudes. These findings were reported by researchers at The University of Texas (UT) at Austin, United States.

However, it’s worth noting that the AI tool did miss one earthquake prediction and issued eight false warnings. The AI system had been trained to identify statistical anomalies in real-time seismic data, which were then correlated with historical earthquake data. This approach is relatively straightforward in terms of machine learning techniques. The results of this study have been published in the journal Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.
