YS Sharmila, Jagan Reddy’s sister, decides not to contest Telangana polls, reason undisclosed.

In an announcement today, YSR Telangana Party chief YS Sharmila declared her decision not to participate in the upcoming Telangana assembly elections, opting instead to endorse the Congress party. Citing the need to prevent the division of anti-incumbency votes and ensure the defeat of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), Sharmila emphasized the importance of supporting the Congress as a strategic move. She described the decision as a “sacrifice” aimed at ending the alleged “corrupt and anti-people rule” of the BRS led by Rao.

Acknowledging that her party’s involvement in the elections could directly impact the vote share of the Congress in multiple constituencies, Sharmila emphasized her willingness to step back in the larger interest of the state and the people. The elections in Telangana are scheduled for November 30, with the results set to be announced on December 3.

Earlier, in September, Sharmila had met with Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, following which she indicated that productive discussions had taken place and cautioned KCR to anticipate defeat. The daughter of former Congress chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy, Sharmila established the YSRTP in 2021 with the aim of bringing the legacy of the YSR family, also known as ‘Rajanna Rajyam,’ to the state. Despite being untested electorally, both Sharmila and her party embarked on a 3,800-km statewide march as part of their efforts. Emphasizing her commitment to the betterment of Telangana, Sharmila stated that her endeavors were directed towards improving the lives of the people and ensuring the benefits of the formation of Telangana.
