The weather conditions were attributed to a trough over the Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coastline, instigating widespread rainfall across the southern state. The trough’s impact could result in intense precipitation, ranging from 11.5 cm to 20.4 cm, in districts such as Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram, according to The Hindu. Over the past 24 hours, several areas in southern Tamil Nadu, including Chidarambaram, received significant rainfall, with Chidarambaram recording the highest amount at 8 cm.

The Additional Director General of Meteorology predicted heightened monsoon activity, intermittently accompanied by sunny intervals during the daytime, commencing on Saturday. Chennai was anticipated to experience intermittent moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning until Sunday.

To prepare for potential emergencies, 12 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams comprising 400 members were deployed in Chennai, while the state government appointed monitoring officers in the 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation and all districts, as reported by TOI.

This year, Tamil Nadu faced a deficit in the Northeast monsoon, receiving an overall rainfall of 12 cm, which is 40% less than the average of 19 cm. Several districts, including Chennai, Ariyalur, Chengalpattu, Krishnagiri, and Kallakurichi, reported a deficit of over 70% in monsoon rain, according to the English daily.
