IMD issues cyclone warning, Chennai schools closed due to heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu; Full forecast available.

Tamil Nadu has faced persistent waterlogging issues over the past few days, with heavy rainfall causing traffic disruptions in numerous locations. Intermittent heavy rains led to inundation and significant traffic congestion, particularly affecting districts such as Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Peerkankaranai, Perungalathur Chengelpet. On Wednesday, Chennai and nearby regions in northern coastal Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall ranging from 5 cm to 6 cm and even higher in some areas, according to Meteorological department officials.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted continued heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 2 and December 3, issuing an orange alert. The orange alert was initially issued for 25 districts of Tamil Nadu on the evening of November 29. In anticipation of a forecasted cyclone warning by the IMD, NDRF teams were placed on standby in Arakkonam town.

Tiruvallur collector declared the closure of all schools and colleges in the district on November 30 due to heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and other northern coastal regions. A social media post on X by the Tiruvallur collector mentioned, “As Northeast Monsoon is widespread in Tiruvallur district and the India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning tomorrow (30.11.2023), all schools and colleges in Tiruvallur district will be closed for the benefit of students.”

According to the IMD forecast for November 30, moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rain are likely over Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Slipper Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal area.

In response to the IMD’s warning of heavy rains in the state, Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai announced the postponement of the ‘En Mann En Makkal’ (My Land, My People) yatra to December 5 in a social media post on X.
